Example Scam

In this example an e-mail has been sent indicating to the potential victim that someone may have attempted to break into their PayPal account. This account could of course contain accessible funds.

What is interesting about this e-mail is that in the latter portion of it, they caution you about logging onto sites with your account information other than PayPay, but the first link they give you, although it appears to be PayPal, it is not. The second link is actually PayPal. The first link was actually something like http://our-site-to-steal-your-login-information.com/~hackerdude/cgi-bin/1.php. It was not to an https: site which would allow your password to be protected. If you logged in at the directed site your password would be sent in the clear as readable information on the internet and of course the scammer would have had your complete account login information.

The first link below has been modified to be safe and take you to a page that may provide some humorous entertainment. Feel free to click on it.

Dear PayPal member,

We recently noticed one or more attempts to log in to your PayPal account
from a foreign IP address.

If you recently accessed your account while traveling, the unusual log in
attempts may have been initiated by you. However, if you did not initiate
the log ins, please visit PayPal as soon as possible to update your
account information:

Update your account is a security measure that will ensure that you are
the only person with access to the account.

Thanks for your patience as we work together to protect your account.
