Route aggregation

Route aggregation provides for routing of traffic for networks with smaller prefixes to networks with larger prefixes. Essentially, route aggregation will reduce the number of advertised routes on large networks by summarizing routes. When an internet service provider breaks their network into smaller subnets to provide service to smaller providers, they usually will only need to advertise the route to their main supernet for traffic to be sent to their smaller providers. This practice works when the large internet service provider has a continuous range of IP addresses to manage.
