An HTML tag is what HTML elements are constructed of. Usually each HTML element has an HTML tag that indicates its beginning and ending although a few elements do not have an ending HTML tag. Elements that do not have an ending HTML tag include:

  • <br> - The line break element which starts a new line of text.
  • <hr> - The horizontal rule element is used to put horizontal lines on the web page.

Header elements are a good example of elements that have beginning and ending HTML tags. There are six header elements from H1 through H6. They each have beginning and ending tags as shown in the table below:
